About the Journal

NORDIA GEOGRAPHICAL PUBLICATIONS (NGP) is a non-profit, peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the Geographical Society of Northern Finland and the Geography Research Unit of the University of Oulu. The scope of the journal covers empirical and theoretical interventions from any branch of geography. NGP particularly welcomes research that is committed to northern dimensions of human, physical and applied geography. The journal follows the peer review standards set by the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies (TSV), and has no submission or article processing charges. It uses the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0), which ensures that authors retain full copyright to their work and are encouraged, after acceptance, to post their work online during and especially after the publication process.

The journal has two publishing formats: NGP Yearbook and separate issues for geographical dissertations.

NGP Yearbook is published annually. The publication provides an opportunity for researchers and post-graduates to present their research to national and international audiences. We welcome all geograpphical approaches and perspectives, representing both basic and applied research. Usually the Yearbook is published as a theme issue after a Call for Papers. However, manuscripts outside the year’s given theme are welcomed and may be published under the Research Articles section. We accept submissions throughout the year. NGP Yearbook publishes original research articles and reviews (ca 3000–6000 words), short papers (ca 2000 words) and extended abstracts (ca 1000–1500 words), all of which are reviewed by two anonymous referees before publishing. The option of an extended abstract is targeted particularly for students. Nordia Geographical Publications is indexed in Scopus and is a level 1 publication in the Publication Forum classification system. The language of NGP Yearbook is English.

Nordia Geographical Publications is also a platform for Geographical doctoral and licentiate theses. The language of these publications is English or Finnish.

The journal was published as Nordia Publications from 1967 to 1990. In 1995, it was relaunched as Nordia Geographical Publications.
